Brake to stop Handbrake when stopped Neutral when parked up Park only when getting out of the vehicle and only after everything else is off I have driven all types of manual, automatic, hybrid and electric vehicles of all sizes This is the best way to operate all of them Best way to think The brake is a body guard, always use it The handbrake is a friend don't use them unnecessarily Neutral when there is no movement guaranteed Park is when your not in the vehicle Hope this helps everyone

Why do people stop steering correctly (push/pull) as soon as they pass the test?

So in order to MAYBE prevent drivers from overlooking one traffic light you make another one completely invisible and give drivers no clue as to whether it's actually in use. Or exists, in the dark. Really glad that we don't have these stupid things in Germany ...

Quick question at 11:39 there are some pedestrian alongside the yellow box. If a pedestrian sets foot on the road and they now have priority you would normally give way, but as you cannot stop in the box, what should you do?

I don't mean this to criticise the driver, but when she does the hill start she indicates. I was taught not too as your indicating to someone that you're going to cut them up. Its best not too and pull away when it's safe 🤷 though my test was 12 years ago 😂

I've been using this in my lessons, but my driving instructor is constantly on my back for slowing down too early, he says "That's what the brakes are for". What do you think about that?

To be honest, glancing on the road signage to crosscheck the Sat Nav is the wiser option in my opinion.

For me, in our country we mostly taught using rev matching rather than clutch bite point in downshifting as it does lessen the lifespan of the clutch. The reason is more of an economic standpoint than anything else. While in many high income countries, repairs and maintenance may be high, but the cost is worth it as it is mostly compensated by ones income, while some even has workshop garage, hence one can work in replacing clutch assembly. Low income nations meanwhile, repairs and maintenance is a big headache, and many vehicles were worked for as long as possible, hence having a much longer lifespan clutch is a big help, less time for the vehicle stopped for repair and maintenance, and more time for the owner to work more in saving money when the time of changing the clutch comes.

I disagree with the notion that those deter would-be light runners. If anything, they just give them an easy excuse if they're caught. ("I couldn't see the light until it was too late")

If you're unsure about this new confusing highway code change, I can also suggest getting a priority vehicle brand such as a BMW. People don't even start to cross on zebra crossings (where normally vehicles need to give way) until that vehicle has passed as everyone knows no one is more important than the BMW driver. (For legal reasons this is a joke)

Hi Richard! First of all, thank you for all your videos! Really helped me a lot when I passed my driving test last February. I have a question regarding when changing gear from 1st to 2nd. I seem to slow down so much whenever I change from 1st to 2nd but it doesn't happen on other gears. I change to 2nd gear around 2000rpm and I do press the clutch quickly. Also, I feel a small jolt or shock once I'm at the biting point during this moment as well. Do you have any advice? Thanks a lot! I've been a subscriber for a while and just watches your videos even though I passed my driving test already.

I personally feel like my braking is more controlled when using engine braking additionally … but maybe that is just me xD Generally I use both: If I have enough time I change down the gears, if I have to come to a stop more quickly I just brake.

I've gotta disagree, mate. Even in diesel cars, you can still stall against such inclines. I have a big diesel manual car and I realised this when I first took it to Hastings. Even with a big engine, it was stalling on hills as I just allowed the clutch to move. I stalled 3-4 times in a row and realised that I've got to put some gas within the biting point to move away smoothly, and eventually did. For all those learners and even experienced drivers, when driving up sharp hills/roads, when driving off at the bottom of the hill from a standstill, get a STRONG biting point. I.e., lift the clutch slightly and press on the gas simultaneously. When you drive off then, press the gas hard. Do not think that just because you have moved away, you can be gentle. The car will start to fall back, and the manual transmission comes under stress. Anyhow, great video. Love your commitment.

Dying out now fortunately, but the Mercedes foot parking brake was always one that absolutely discouraged using it. Useless for hill starts, as it was simply on and off, you have to use left foot braking. (In a diesel manual, the advice was using idle in my Vito, but there are limits on how steep the hill was - nightmare!). However, later Mercedes had an excellent double tap system on the brake pedal to engage hold, so, together with stop/start, very easy to use in traffic, and the foot operated hand brake only really useful for hill parking (the bang when you release it is, shall we say, surprisingly unrefined!).

Not a truck driver but do understand that they are subject to driving hour restrictions and that even that "slightly faster" can make the difference between getting back to base in a single run or having to stop for a break for an hour a mile away from home which they have to do in that situation, it's not a choice. A little context and understanding goes a long way here.

They're a terrible idea. I've had a situation where the red light wasn't working, on a roundabout, and I unwittingly ran a red light because nothing was displayed and the amber/green aren't visible.

I thought it was to prevent sunlight from overwhelming the lights change to know what colour it is on
